July 13th, Sculpture Exhibition

Lojart Gallery is proud to present local sculptor John Hughes. The artist reception will kick off the two-week exhibition and sale on Friday, July 13th at the gallery from 5-8p.m in downtown Morgan Hill. You don’t want to miss the opportunity to speak with Hughes who blended wood, metal and imagination in his pieces.

Sculptor John Hughes Solo Exhibition Hughes grew up in the burgeoning Silicon Valley before concrete and buildings consumed orchards. His thoughts convey the influence of that era in his artwork:

“I grew up in Santa Clara Valley starting in the late 1940s when it was called Valley of Delights. It was mostly orchards and farmland then. In the 50s, and subsequent decades I watched it change into Silicon Valley, and the wall-to-wall people and buildings that it is now. The construction most used in those days was tilt ups made of cast concrete and beams developed from the transformation of the fertile farmland into buildings and pavement. It seemed twisted to me to cover up some of the best farmland in the world with pavement, houses, and high rises.

The materials I use vary. Bronze, wood, resin, cardboard, and found objects are used depending on the idea I want to express. Much of the   wood is saved from throwaway piles. The cardboard and paper is all packaging, mail and magazines. I like to reclaim as much throw away stuff as I can. Some of the wood slabs were saved from orchards being torn out in the early 70s. In those days they would bulldoze the trees into a pile and burn them. “

Lojart Gallery features a different artist every two weeks on the second Friday evening of the month. It is located at 35 East First Street, Suite B near Monterey Road in Morgan Hill. For more information and to view John Hughes’ sculptures please go to www.lojart.com or call 408-779-8907.
